Abstract

The Grammar by O. Pavlovskуj is the first printed grammar of the new Ukrainian language. In the conditions of absent Ukrainian state, it initiated and determined the ethnolinguistic principle of forming Ukrainian grammar for the next hundred years. Grammar by O. Pavlovskуj is a source of knowledge about Ukraine, reflects the mental characteristics of Ukrainians, the specifics of the Ukrainian language. O. Pavlovsky represented the Ukrainian ethnos by verbal means. He was able to reproduce a holistic mental picture of the world of Ukrainians in the strictly censored conditions of the Russian Empire when only a few fiction books were printed in Ukraine. Grammar by O. Pavlovskyj can be considered as a cardio central. since the author mentally feels Ukrainian. In his opinion, the knowledge of the mentality of the people, of his culture and history is possible only through the study of his native language. In his scientific work O. Pavlovsky describes more complete ethnic and linguistic picture of Ukrainian world and combines various types of linguistic description in grammar: the
author’s narrative, the text of grammar, the Ukrainian-Russian dictionary of contrastive spoken-communicative vocabulary, the non-equivalent ethnographic vocabulary, the dictionary of the learned forms of anthroponyms, Dictionary of idioms and paroemias, the operation of lexemes in various multi-genre works.
O. Pavlovskyj’s cardio central grammar is based on ethnolinguistic principles, is a source of knowledge about Ukraine. It shows specific features of the Ukrainian language and its prospects in the future declares the author’s active civic position, which laid the mental and philosophical basis for the сreating of Ukrainian linguistics.
