Abstract

Nizhyn Higher School with its constituent educational institutions was a unique phenomenon in Ukraine in the educational environment, the staff of which trained several thousand specialists in various professions. Among those who glorified their alma mater are the characters of our article: composer and musician, Ukrainian cellist A. E. Galenkovsky, who made his first steps in music under the guidance of a teacher-musician of the Physics and Mathematics Lyceum F. E. Sevryugin, famous professor-musicologist, folklorist O. I. Rubets, who, thanks to the professor of the Law Lyceum E. M. Belobrov, began to collect and study Ukrainian folk songs, as well as a graduate of the same lyceum, the famous singer F. G. Stravinsky, who demonstrated his singing talent in Nizhyn in the lyceum church choir and in performances on the local stage. Unusual is the fate of a graduate of the Law Lyceum S. A. Yurkovsky, who became interested in photography, which began to take only the first steps in Russia that time. He entered the history of photography as an outstanding inventor. Each of the cultural figures represented here went to their new profession in their own ways, but always felt their beginning in Nizhyn.
