Kulzhynsky, O. Lavrovsky, I. Srebnytsky, M. Speransky, P. Zabolotsky. The author pays a special attention to the revival of scientific Gogol studies at Nizhyn Pedagogical Institute named after N. V. Gogol in 1979, which gave an impetus for the multilateral research into the writer’s legacy. Drawing on these outstanding results the University managed to open the Centre for Gogol Studies which is the first in Ukraine. The article also discusses the state of contemporary Gogol Studies in the University.
H. V. V. Gogol http://lkp.ndu.edu.ua/index.php/polissia/article/view/385
The article is devoted to the story "The old world landowners" of N. V. Gogol. It substantiates the idea of eternity and all-the integrity of love, which has reached its "limit" when the two became the one. It can be traced how the old world is changing when rational (the synonymous with evil) enters. "Mental infancy" – a pledge of the existence of earthly paradise, but the idyll comes to an end with the "knowledge". There is a violation of the external borders of the old world of landowners, where the space in is clearly divided into "their" and "foreign". The estate of Pulcheria Ivanovna and Afanasy Ivanovich is the House with a capital letter, and the main foundation of this House is love, which indicates that N. V. Gogol’s characters are connected. Even after the death and understanding the inevitable death of the patriarchal life
love remains, where "the two will be the one" (P. Florensky). In this paper, the author focuses on such peculiarities of Gogol prose as poetry. It also underlines that the story "The old world landowners" – is the poetization of the prose of life.
V. V. The author of the article proves that the "bucolic life" of old-world landowners is closely related to an idyllic chronotope, in which the idyllic spatial world of two old people is secluded, isolated, distant from the "external" world, it is distinguished by integrity and completeness. The article notes that the structure of literary space and time in this work is annular: the space narrows from domestic to idyllic, while time narrows from the present to the past, that is, from the outside world to the old-world. The study states that in the text of the short story the big world, located outside the Tovstogubov estate, is the antithesis to the old-world life, the old world. The article emphasizes that the idyllic space in the Gogol’s short story is maximally filled with a number of objects, buildings, structures, trees, plants, sounds, smells, visions. The article proves that the hospitality motive and the food motive are important components of the idyllic chronotope in the Gogol’s short-story. The author of the article also emphasizes that the separation of loving old people, that is, the breakdown of the spiritual, inner space of Afanasy Ivanovich is reflected in the destruction of the physical space, primarily in the destruction of the boundaries that once separated the two worlds – the paling and the fence. It is argued that the time of the old-world landowners – kind, cordial and sincere – is receding into the past. In conclusion, it is noted that with this literary work Gogol said goodbye to the old Ukraine in the cycle "Mirgorod": on the one hand, with the heroic chronotope of "Taras Bulba", and on the other hand, with the idyllic chronotope of "The Old-World Landowners".
A. The functioning of onym Gogol in the texts of Russian poets of the XX–XXI centuries (from representatives of the Silver age to modern network poetry) is analyzed in the article. The contexts in which this onym functions as a reference element of comparative tropes (figurative comparisons, metaphorical constructions and their combinations with other types of tropes) are studied, which leads to its acquisition of the status of a linguocultural concept. Most of the collected examples illustrate the tropical structuring of the linguocultural concept of Gogol as a metaphorical and symbolic embodiment of the great classic, who created a gallery of immortal images, subtly denouncing human vices, one of the most mysterious personalities of his time, they actualize primarily the encyclopedic fund of knowledge about Gogol. The name Gogol is functioning as the "left elements" ("scope target"), and the "right elements" ("sphere source") of the comparative tropes constructions; it is used by a number of poets to create the autometaphors (I am Gogol), onomastic metaphors like the new Gogol, the local Gogol, etc. This indicates the significance and relevance of this personal name for domestic and world culture, about its embeddedness in the conceptual and linguistic picture of the world of the educated man, refracted through the prism of metaphor, about functioning as one of the axiological markers of individual and collective intellectual and creative innovations.
S. Shevchenko http://lkp.ndu.edu.ua/index.php/polissia/article/view/389
In the article the peculiarities of reproduction of Petersburg’s topos are analyzed on the example of the novel "The Musician" by T. Shevchenko. Definition of the concept "topos of the city" is determined, narrative features of creating the prose topos of Petersburg are considered. The specificity of the image of the epic topos of the city through the urban textures is revealed. The locus of the hospital, the garden, the Bolshoi Theater, the room, the institution, the hotel, and the Kazan Cathedral are isolated and interpreted, forming the geopoetic matrix of the city’s topos through the sensual intentions of the hero-musician. It is
investigated that the author constructs the artistic topos of Petersburg in two spatial models: firstly, as a topos of hopelessness, disbelief, illness and loss of life prospects; and secondly, as a city of a progressive center of culture and art of the empire that promotes the development of the talented youth. The model of the socio-domestic topos is marked by negative intentions, as the city serves as the eater of the fate of a talented person, a topos damaged by the progressive destruction of the search for the truth and the realization of the human possibilities. The model of the geopoetic topos in prose is realized through the reception of the musician surrounding the attributes of the city as a unique center of life in the urban environment and the realization of his requests and needs. The topos of Petersburg is a simulated fragment of the life of the musician’s fate that closely correlates with the author’s intentions. The reproduction of the city’s locus is reduced to a physiological sketch where the certification of the depicted urbanistic reality through the modus of the implicit epistolary recipient serves as a key element.
D. The debut poetry collection "Ran" (2011), as well as the two following collections "Os" (2014) and "Az" (2014) became a notable phenomenon in the modern literature of Ukraine. Her works were awarded numerous prizes, including "Smoloskyp", "Blahovist", Ukrainian-German Oles Honchar prize, etc. The poetess got positive reviews, but the formation of literary-critical discourse on the codification of her creative work is still active. Her poetry is metaphorical, saturated with allusions and cultural signs, she uses various poetry forms, and her verses are characterized by richness of images and visuality. Despite the fact that emotions in each collection are different, it is advisable to perceive the
lyrics of all three collections as a whole, since most of artistic images are basic and repetitive. Appealing to the philosophical depth of her lyric poetry, the author makes an attempt to read existential motifs of the poetess. In the centre of attention there are, first of all, meaningful intentions and the logic of their development from the finality of human existence awareness through the growth of anxiety, discontent, fear and despair, through comprehension and
enlightenment to the joy of being, love, happiness and light. The whole spectrum of emotions is fully revealed in a cyclic form, which aims the reader on self-sufficiency and completeness of the process, and also opens the prospect of further analysis of Iryna Shuvalova’s writings in the context of mythological, biblical, culturological codes.
O. Akunin’s novel "Altin-tolobas" http://lkp.ndu.edu.ua/index.php/polissia/article/view/391
The problems of cultural-centerism in the article were observed in ancient Russia during the time of the king Alexei Mihailovich between Muscovites and foreigners. The aim of the research is to explore the identity of one nation through the prism of cultural and moral values of another nation based on the material of the novel "Altin-tolobas" by B. Akunina. There is explored the specificity of Russian life before Petrine period of the seventeenth century which is perceived by foreigners "from the outside and from above" and "at the level of eyes". The term of "Russianness" as quintessence of national identity in context of the later part of seventeenth century which contains the concepts of "home", "society" and "statehood". The concept of "home" shows us the imagination about person`s private life: family and family code of related communication. The concept of "society"-"homo publicus" correlates with the notions of human behavior in society and implementation of the rules of people`s communication. The concept of "statehood" focuses on the state system and on
the personality of the king and his relationship with the nobles and society. It is noted that presented concepts represented the components of the national identity of the Russian people: place, rule and person. The cultural opposition Moscow – German is analysed, the contrast between the two cultures is most closely traceable to cultural-centrism as the perception of only its culture as a single civilized. Not only devotion of the king and his ocupation with the rules of "House building" is defined in B. Akynin`s novel, but also the interest of the interest of the most progressive circles of the nobility, headed by the first Minister Artamon Mathev of Western European culture, which was characteristic of the last years of the reign of Alexei Mikhalovich.
T. In order to confirm a linguistic paradigm of cognitive linguistics in the course, the author encounters some unclear scientific terminology of speech activity category in psychology and linguistics. It is analyzed by professor A. S. Zelenko in his study devoted to the analysis of the problem of semantics in linguistics; by psychologist O. A. Each of the scientists has different subject matters: the first scientisthandles the problems of semasiology, while the main focus of the second scientist is the category of mental activity and consciousness. What combines these two scholars is a conscious aspect of solving their stated problems. On the basis of a comparative analysis of the concepts in psychology and linguistics, it becomes apparent in the aspect of the cognitive paradigm that consciousness is a form of the psychic activity of Elitnyk, which is realized by the language model of the world. The main approaches of investigating the common language are considered. Three key ways of analysis of spatial lexemes are destinguished: genetic-historical, normative and stylistic. The emphasis is focused on the criteria for the allocation of spatial vocabulary among other language phenomena. The main content of the study is an indepth analysis of the functional-stylistic features of extra-normative linguistic phenomena of Oleksandr Dovzhenko`s idiolect. Among non-normative speech phenomena, we distinguish phonetic modifications of the words, spooky words with a negative emotional estimation, vernacular phraseological units, expressive verbs, spatial nicknames and surzhik. From the cognitive perspective the study of verbalizing objectivity and subjectivity effects involves mental processes accompanying the creation of non-literary texts and influencing the audience. Objectivity effect is defined as content representation in terms of unambiguity, accuracy and neutrality whereas the subjectivity effect rests on verbalizing contents with regard to ambiguity, approximation and appeal to the rhetorical means of influence. To differentiate between objectivity and subjectivity effects scope of predication and image-schemas are used. Scope of predication is formed via correlation between the profile representing events and their participants and the base constituting the background for understanding the profile. Image-schemas are identified as preconceptual structures, which arise from, or are grounded in, human recurrent bodily movements through space, perceptual interaction, and ways of manipulating objects.
A. The relations underlying the representation of conflict-crisis communicative component include counterforce, blockage, contact, and enablement. The communicative counterforce is rendered by the verbs denoting accusation, blockage is evoked by negations expressed by the particle "not" and the notional words with negative prefixes to downplay blame or mishaps, eliminate the planned actions, or avert contact. The communicative contact is represented by the units denoting meetings and talks aimed at solving the conflict-crisis with the majority of headlines foregrounding the units referring to Western powers. The argumentative contact is rendered
by the units designating the evidence concerning perception, visual control or prediction mainly characteristic of the Russian side. The role of the communicative contribution which is reflected by performative utterances equal to an action and by promises depends on the status of the side voicing it. The performative headlines render intentions, promises, confirmations, changes of the participants’ political or legal status. The communicative contribution has two variants: self-contributions and other-contribution. Promises are coded by the verbs pledge, vow, bid at the national, international and global levels. It is found that the biggest number of promises, though failed, is characteristic of the national level. The article reveals that the structure of news headlines is tantamount to that of utterances which results in distinguishing two types of their structure: canonical coinciding with the organization of the underlying image schemas with the source affecting the target and non-canonical with the foregrounded units denoting the counterforce target or the relations between the conflicting sides.
S. Healing charms are examined by scholars from the standpoint of their structure as well as their voluntative and magical/mystical function. Yet the means and communicative mechanisms of linguocultural coding and its realization in the discourse of healing have never been studied in a focused manner. In particular, there is a need for the studies of verbal forms of expression of linguocultural codes. The present study uses the following methods of linguistic inquiry: semasiological procedure of field modelling; component and distributive analysis; and contextological interpretation. The article addresses the problem of representing spiritual, spatial, biomorphic and sensory linguocultural codes. It argues that their linguistic realization depends on the genre, thematic and structural features of folklore texts. “Desire” as an element of healing charms drives either positive or negative utilitarian and teleological evaluations of linguistic signs in the studied codes. The study analyses the recurrent linguistic images of healing charms. It describes their role within the linguocultural coding of the proper (anthroponyms, anthropomorphonyms, toponyms) and common names. It also examines how the potential of ethnocultural symbols is being used. It elucidates that the discourse of healing is produced due to the activization not only of the magical and the voluntative but also the aesthetic, axiological, expressive and suggestive functions of code verbalizers. A fruitful line of inquiry into the discourse of healing would also address the representation of the medical code of linguoculture.
A. I. His works have been translated into more than twenty languages. The purpose of the submitted article is to conduct an exemplary comparative analysis of the selected original Korczak's texts and their German translations. The researcher's attention
was focused mainly on the lexical, syntactic and stylistic layers of the text. The results obtained allow for a few remarks about style and language of Korczak. The issues of translatability vs. lack of full equivalence remain in close relation to the results of the analysis and the translation process.
Z.
